Victory Pirates

Another rainy day in Glasgow. Spokane has nothing on this city, especially after having just gone on a two hour treasure hunt in a combination of rain, wind, and slushy snow. Even though the weather wasn’t great, it was still a ton of fun to explore the city and take quality selfies. I was in a team of five with my flat mates and another international student named Alok. We called ourselves the Victory Pirates. We got to see a ton of cool stuff that I will have to go back to at some point while I am here. It was also a competitive scavenger hunt, and since I like winning, we got second place out of all the groups and got some pretty rad postcards.

The city of Glasgow is very interesting. The people apparently live off of a drink called “IRN BRU”, which is bright orange and is on my list to try. The national animal here is the unicorn. There are buildings that were once churches have since been turned into pubs. I have never been in a city where there is a pub on literally every street corner. The people are very kind and are not easily offended. Our tour guide gave a really interesting example as to how kind they actually are:

“Glaswegians love the word ‘sorry’. If you bump into someone, you always say sorry. If you stab my mom, you say ‘sorry she got in the way’.”

Apparently it is really hard to offend a Glaswegian, so hopefully I never will during my time here. Also, I do not know if it is a European thing or if I just haven’t learned my table manners, but everyone here eats all their meals with a knife and fork. I really need to get on the program with that one.

Tomorrow is the first day of school, but I am not enrolled in any classes other than bag piping, but I should have a proper class schedule by the end of the week. I am not exactly sure what I will do with the extra free time, but there a ton of museums and sites that I want to explore.

Until next time,

-L
